What we know about the COVID19 vaccines available:
Currently there are three different COVID 19 vaccines available in the United States:
1. Pfizer-BioNTech COVID 19 Vaccine
2. Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine
3. Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID 19 Vaccine
Why are there 3 different types of COVID 19 vaccines available?
Simply put, the above 3 companies were able to produce an effective COVID19 vaccine which they demonstrated with clinical trials, and were able to get emergency use approval from the FDA.
It is the same way we have different manufacturers with their own brands of beer or cola products because there is a demand for the product, and there are companies that can make it.
Why are the COVID19 vaccines safe for more people ?
The currently authorized COVID vaccines are safe for more people because they are
NOT live vaccines. so the good news is more people can get them without worrying about those people getting the ACTUAL COVID 19 virus
Live vaccines usually are avoided in those with a weakened immune system because of the potential dangers of overwhelming an individual's immune system, like those with immune compromised diseases or states, undergoing chemo therapy or the elderly etc.
(Some examples of popular live vaccines that we currently use are some of the shingles and measles-mumps-rubella vaccines, and not everyone can get them)
MORE SCIENTIFIC DETAILS:
How the vaccines work:
The COVID vaccines essentially find a safe way to introduce the body a COVID19 specific identifier known as the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. This specific spike glycoprotein is how the COVID virus is able to enter our own cells. By letting our body know what to look out for, our bodies will be ready to identify that specific spike glycoprotein the first time our body encounters it attached to a virus, and this will give our body the ability to fight back and neutralize the virus.
IF you want to know very specific scientific details of exactly what the COVID 19 vaccines are:
1. "The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are lipid nanoparticle-formulated, nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccines encoding the prefusion spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
2. The Janssen vaccine is a recombinant replication-incompetent adenovirus type 26 (Ad26) vector encoding the stabilized prefusion spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. "(1)
